Art is always involved with the fundamental ideas and materials of the society from which it emerges. In the contemporary United States, these basic substances are media and consumption. The role of the artist has now become that of a conscious consumer of media, filtering and re-ordering the barrage of visual information to create their work.

Artcodex is a collective of four artists who create political work that stems from this awareness of media. We all use appropriated imagery, taking from a diverse range of sources including the internet, film stills, photojournalism, home movies and logos. Through the process of re-contextualizing well-known or existing imagery, we are decoding our cultural symbols and icons, and creating a window into the subtext of our society.
